Beantown Brawl – Game 1 Straight Wager Yanks vs. Red Sox

2007-06-05

What better way to kick off the weekend than the first game of the greatest rivalry in sports, Red Sox vs. Yankees. These 2 teams are seemingly going in opposite directions with the Yankees floundering and the Red Sox enjoying the best record in baseball. I think the Yanks will take 2 of 3 and would start it off with a win in this one. I also expected a lot of offense.

So my picks were as follows:
Red Sox/Yankees over 10.5
Yankees over Red Sox

Well, the question of whether or not I would hit the over was answered very early. For that matter, so did the game’s outcome. While Yankee starter Chien Ming Wang was rocky early, Tim Wakefield was dreadful as the Yankees jumped out to a 9-3 lead after 4. Though no lead at Fenway is insurmountable, it was on this night as the Yankees held on for a 9-5 win.

Manny Ramirez had four hits and Dustin Pedroia three for Boston, which lost both third baseman Mike Lowell and right-fielder J.D. Drew to apparently minor injuries during the game.

Jorge Posada had a pair of doubles, including a three-run shot to cap a six-run rally that broke a fourth-inning tie. Rodriguez reached base three times and scored twice despite the mockery of a Fenway crowd that -- with the division race apparently in hand -- had no place else to direct its longstanding anger.

Chien-Ming Wang scattered 10 hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs while striking out one to win for the third time in four starts.

5 players were hit by pitches in this game. Let’s see if there will be any more hostilities over the rest of the weekend.

Till next time, may all your bets be winners.
